Our Favorite Ways to Explore the Holy City Without Spending a Fortune

Jerusalem has a reputation for being an expensive destination, but the truth is that you can experience the city's history, culture, and incredible atmosphere without spending a lot of money.

At New Gate Hostel, we welcome travelers from all over the world, and one of the questions we hear most often is:

"How can I enjoy Jerusalem on a budget?"

Here are some of our favorite tips.

1. Get to Jerusalem for Less

After landing at Ben Gurion Airport, the easiest and most affordable way to reach Jerusalem is by train. A ticket to Jerusalem Yitzhak Navon Station costs around 30–40 NIS.

From there, hop on the Jerusalem Light Rail and get off at City Hall Station. The ride costs just 8 NIS, and from the station it's only a 5-minute walk to New Gate Hostel.

2. Stay Within Walking Distance of the Old City

One of the biggest expenses when traveling is transportation. Staying in the right location means you can save both time and money.

New Gate Hostel is located inside the Pontifical Institute Notre Dame of Jerusalem Center, just steps from the New Gate of the Old City. Most of Jerusalem's main attractions can be reached on foot.

Our rooms start from 160 NIS per night, and we recommend booking the breakfast rate from 180 NIS. It offers excellent value and gives you a great start before a full day of exploring.

Guests also have access to a shared kitchenette with a microwave, oven, kettle, and refrigerator, making it easy to prepare simple meals and save even more during your stay.

3. Discover Jerusalem's Free Treasures

Some of Jerusalem's most famous attractions don't charge an entrance fee.

Spend the day exploring places such as:

• The Western Wall

• The Via Dolorosa

• The Arab Market (Souq)

• The Temple Mount (during visiting hours)

• The charming streets and hidden courtyards of the Old City

Whether you're interested in history, religion, archaeology, architecture, or simply soaking up the atmosphere, you can easily spend an entire day exploring without spending a single shekel.

4. Visit the Tower of David Jerusalem Museum

If you're planning to pay for just one museum, we highly recommend the Tower of David Jerusalem Museum.

For around 60 NIS, you'll discover the story of Jerusalem through impressive multimedia exhibitions inside the city's ancient citadel. It's also a welcome escape from the summer heat and one of the best introductions to Jerusalem's unique history.

5. Enjoy Authentic Local Food

You don't need an expensive restaurant to enjoy great food in Jerusalem.

The Old City is full of small family-owned restaurants serving delicious hummus, falafel, shawarma, and fresh Middle Eastern dishes. A satisfying meal usually costs between 30 and 60 NIS.

If you're looking for coffee or a lighter lunch, nearby Mamilla Mall offers several cafés with beautiful views and outdoor seating.

6. Take a Break at Teddy Park

After walking through the Old City, head to Teddy Park, located just outside Jaffa Gate.

With its shaded lawns, benches, and famous dancing fountains, it's the perfect place to relax before continuing your adventure.

7. Finish the Day with One of Jerusalem's Best Views

As the sun begins to set, Jerusalem takes on a magical golden glow.

Take a stroll near Jaffa Gate, or enjoy panoramic views from the 360° Rooftop Lookout at Notre Dame Jerusalem Center. Watching the sunset over the Old City is one of those experiences you'll remember long after your trip ends.

Jerusalem Doesn't Have to Be Expensive

The best experiences in Jerusalem often aren't the most expensive ones. Walking through ancient streets, discovering hidden corners, tasting local food, and watching the sunset over the Old City are memories that stay with you forever.
